Applicable to Entuity v22.0 upwards
How do I manage web applications and view SSL certificate expiry information?
Introduction:
From Entuity v22.0 upwards, you can monitor the SSL certificate expiry of specific web applications. This works by querying specific URLs for their response, and collecting data for streams and attributes specific to the new Web Application type.
You can manage your specified web applications via the Web Application Management page, and view data for them from the SSL Certificate Expiry dashboard and Web Application Summary dashboard.
For information on the web application object type, please see this note below.
Metrics polled:
When enabled, web application polling retrieves data regarding SSL certificate expiry for the web applications that you have added. Certificates are checked every 24 hours, but can be polled manually.
Thresholds, incidents and events:
Web apps have one of the following statuses:
- - valid SSL certificate.
- - 'Warning' threshold, indicates there are between 60 and 31 days until expiry of the web app's SSL certificate. These are the default values, and can be edited - please see this article for help on editing this threshold.
- - 'Critical' threshold, indicates there are 30 days or fewer until expiry of the web app's SSL certificate. These are the default values, and can be edited - please see this article for help on editing this threshold.
- - certificate polling disabled.
- - polling failed.
- - first poll has not yet run.
Warning threshold - when polling indicates that there are 60 days or fewer until SSL certificate expiry (or a custom value you have selected for the 'Warning' threshold), an SSL Certificate Expiration Warning event will be raised, and the SSL Certificate Expiration Warning incident opened.
Critical threshold - when polling indicates that there are 30 days or fewer until SSL certificate expiry on a web app (or a custom value you have selected for the 'Critical' threshold), an SSL Certificate Expiration Critical Warning event will be raised, and the SSL Certificate Critical incident opened.
Permission requirements:
To access the Web Application Management page, you will require either Administrator rights or the Inventory Administration user permission. Please see this article for help and information on user permissions in Entuity.
If you do not have these requisite user permissions, you will still be able to view the dashboards relating to web application management.
You can specify which Views the web apps are in, by which you can restrict which web apps can be seen based on which users have access to those Views.
Licensing:
Each individual web app consumes one Basic Device license credit. If there are not enough Basic Device license credits available, a web app will consume a Full Device license credit.
If you attempt to add a web app and there are not enough licenses, the addition will fail with an error message indicating that the web application failed to save.
There is an additional license charge for monitoring each SSL certificate.
Please see this article for further help and information on licensing in Entuity.
Note regarding the web application object type - web apps do not need to be taken under management by Entuity:
A web application does not need to be taken under management by Entuity as would a device. In Entuity, a web application is not considered a device. Instead, it is added as a Web Application type object via the Web Application Management page.
A web app is also not linked to any device or server. Web apps only allow for SSL certificate monitoring
