User defined thresholds across servers and configuration sets
Introduction:
From Entuity v22.0 upwards, you can configure thresholds on specified stream attributes through the UI (i.e., without having to write config). You can specify system or custom events that are then raised when the threshold value is met or exceeded. You can create user defined thresholds on individual servers or in server configuration sets.
User defined thresholds assist with the followin use cases:
- an existing stream attribute does not already have an associated threshold.
- there is a requirement to add additional thresholds to supplement one or more existing ones, possibly to provide an early warning for operators.
Thresholds are a data type, not a managed object.
Note, you cannot create user defined thresholds on virtual streams.
Types of UD threshold:
There are two types of user defined threshold:
-
Numeric - this is applicable against continuous variable values, i.e. for the state of an attribute. Depending on the value, an event is raised at one of the following state levels:
- value > critical threshold = Critical
- value > high threshold = High
- value > warn threshold = Warn
- value < low threshold = Low
-
Status - this is applicable against distinct variable values, i.e. represents the status of an attribute. A variable value will be tested to see if it matches one of the conditions set by the user, and if so an event is raised at one of the following status levels:
- Up
- Down
- Disabled
- Other
Permission requirements:
To access and manage User Defined Threshold functionality, a user requires the User Defined Thresholds and Event Administration user group permissions.
Please see this article for further help and information on managing user permissions in Entuity.
To manage and view my user defined thresholds:
From the Main Menu and then Administration page, navigate to the User Defined Thresholds page. From this page you can view your user defined thresholds, and add, modify, and delete thresholds.
The User Defined Thresholds page consists of two tables - Summary table and Details table.
Summary table:
The Summary table lists the stream attributes (and their subsequent object type) on which you have created user defined thresholds, and the number of status thresholds and numeric thresholds on each. From this table, you can add new thresholds to stream attributes, and modify existing ones.
This table provides the following details:
Column | Description |
---|---|
Stream | selected stream, e.g. 'CPU Utilization'. |
Attribute | specific attribute of the stream to which the threshold applies, e.g. '5s Util%' |
Type | object type to which the stream is applicable. |
# Status Thresholds | number of user defined status thresholds created on this stream attribute. |
# Numeric Thresholds | number of user defined numeric thresholds created on this stream attribute. |
Select one of the streams to populate the Details table below.
Details table:
The Details table is populated by your selection of a stream attribute from the Summary table above. It lists the user defined thresholds (both status and numeric) that you have created for the selected stream attribute. From this table, you can edit or delete individual thresholds.
This table provides the following details:
Column | Description |
---|---|
Source | threshold source. |
Threshold/Status | display name of the threshold. |
Level | threshold level, e.g. 'Critical' or 'High'. |
Event | event that is raised when threshold is met or exceeded. |
Severity | severity of the event. |
User defined thresholds across servers and configuration sets:
You can create and manage user defined thresholds on a server or config set basis, using the server/config set dropdown field in the top left of the User Defined Thresholds page.
Note, if a user defined threshold utilizes a custom event, then that custom event will need to be created on all servers in a configuration set in order for the user defined threshold to successfully sync across those servers.
Please see this article for help and information on using server configuration sets in Entuity.
Audit log:
Audit log entries are raised for User Defined Threshold user actions - Add, Modify and Delete.
Note, the Audit Log continues to show separate entries for when system threshold overrides are set or unset.
