Configuration details to specify when adding the device to Entuity
Entuity supports hardware monitoring on Dell PowerEdge servers through the Dell OpenManage portfolio using SNMP. Dell OpenManage supports most Dell PowerEdge servers, and is supported on most enterprise operating systems, including Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu Server, SLES, and ESX.
To connect to a Dell PowerEdge server through Dell OpenManage, the Entuity collector uses port 161 (which must be open bidirectionally between the Entuity server/agent and the Dell PowerEdge server) and an SNMP community string or SNMP user account.
Supported devices
- Dell PowerEdge T-, M-, and C-Series Servers, 8th-11th Generation
To create an SNMP community string on Windows:
Note, the Windows SNMP Service only supports SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c.
- Download and install the latest version of Dell OpenManage for your generation server.
You can find Dell OpenManage at the Dell support page by performing a search by Service Tag, and then navigating to Drivers & downloads. - From Services on your Dell PowerEdge server, confirm whether the SNMP service is running on the operating system. If not, install the SNMP service:
- Navigate to Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Click Turn Windows features on or off on the left side of the window, and click Next until you get to Features.
- Scroll through the menu to SNMP Service, select its check box, and click Next to confirm and install the service.
- From Services, enable the SNMP Agent and Alert destinations by right-clicking on the SNMP Service and selecting Properties.
The SNMP Service Properties window is displayed. - Navigate to the Security tab and select or add a read-only SNMP community string in the Accepted community names field.
- Select either the Accept SNMP packets from any host or Accept SNMP Packets from these hosts radio button.
If you selected the second option, add the IP address of your Entuity server/agent as an accepted host. - Click OK to save your changes.
To create an SNMP community string or user account on Linux:

You can find Dell OpenManage at the Dell support page by performing a search by Service Tag, and then navigating to Drivers & downloads. -
Update your operating system.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux:sudo yum update all
Ubuntu:sudo apt-get update
SUSE:sudo zypper update
-
Install SNMP onto the Dell PowerEdge server.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux:sudo yum install net-snmp-utils
Ubuntu:sudo apt-get install snmpd
SUSE:sudo zypper install net-snmp
- Use nano (or any other text editor) to open the
entuity_home/etc/snmp/snmpd.conffile for editing. -
In the
snmpd.conffile, configure the SNMP read-only community string and/or the SNMP Agent IP address, and then save and close the file.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux:rocommunity <community-string> <IP-Address-of-Agent>
Ubuntu:agentAddress udp:<IP-Address-of-Agent>
SUSE:rocommunity <community-string>
-
If you installed SNMPv1 or SNMPv2c, skip this step. Otherwise, if you installed SNMPv3, create an SNMPv3 user account for the server.
net-snmp-create-v3-user -ro -A -a {MD5|SHA} -X -x {DES|AES} -
Restart the SNMP service.
sudo service snmpd restart
SUSE:systemctl enable --now snmp.service
