To create an SNMP community string or user account on Linux
Configuration details to specify when adding the asset to Entuity
Entuity supports hardware monitoring on HP ProLiant Servers and HP Integrity Servers through the HP Insight Manager Server Agent using SNMP. HP Insight Manager supports most HP ProLiant and HP Integrity Servers, and is supported on most enterprise operating systems, including Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu Server, True64, and other Linux distributions.
To connect to an HP ProLiant or HP Integrity Server through the HP Insight Manager Server Agent, the Entuity collector uses port 161 (which must be open bidirectionally between the Entuity server/agent and the HP server) and an SNMP community string or SNMP user account.
Supported devices
- HP ProLiant Servers
- HP Integrity Servers
To create an SNMP community string on Windows:
Note, the Windows SNMP Service only supports SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c.
- From Services on your HP ProLiant or HP Integrity Server, confirm whether the SNMP service is running on the operating system. If not, install the SNMP service:
- Navigate to Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Click Turn Windows features on or off on the left side of the window, and click Next until you get to Features.
- Scroll through the menu to SNMP Service, select its check box, and click Next to confirm and install the service.
- From Services, enable the SNMP Agent and Alert destinations by right-clicking on the SNMP service and selecting Properties.
The SNMP Service Properties window is displayed. - Navigate to the Security tab and select or add a read-only SNMP community string in the Accepted community names field.
- Select either the Accept SNMP packets from any host or Accept SNMP Packets from these hosts radio button.
If you selected the second option, add the IP address of your Entuity server/agent as an accepted host. - Click OK to save your changes.
To create an SNMP community string or user account on Linux:
- Download and install the latest version of HP Insight Manager for your generation server.
-
Update your operating system.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux:sudo yum update all
Ubuntu:sudo apt-get update
- Install the HP System Health Application and Command Line Utilities (
hp-health).
-
Red Hat Enterprise Linux:
sudo yum update install hp-health
Ubuntu:sudo apt-get install hp-health
-
Install the
net-snmpservice and the HP SNMP Agents.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux:sudo yum install net-snmp-utils
sudo yum install hp-snmp-agents
Ubuntu:sudo apt-get install net-snmp-utils
sudo apt-get install hp-snmp-agents -
To configure active agents, run the
/sbin/hpsnmpconfigcommand asroot.
Running this command creates thesnmpd.conffile on the server./sbin/hpsnmpconfig
-
Use nano (or any other text editor) to open the
snmp.conffile for editing, and, based on your operating system version, add a line in the file that links the HP SNMP Agent to the main SNMP daemon.sudo nano /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf
(64-bit OS): dlmod cmaX /usr/lib64/libcmaX64.so
(32-bit OS): dlmod cmaX /usr/lib/libcmaX.so -
Add a line to the file that configures the SNMP community string and/or the HP SNMP Agent IP address, and then save and close the file.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux:rocommunity <community-string> <IP-Address-of-Agent>
Ubuntu:agentAddress udp:<IP-Address-of-Agent>
-
For SNMPv1 or SNMPv2c, skip this step. Otherwise, for SNMPv3, create an SNMPv3 user account for the HP server.
net-snmp-create-v3-user -ro -A -a {MD5|SHA} -X -x {DES|AES} -
Restart the SNMP service.
sudo service snmpd restart
SUSE:systemctl enable --now snmp.service
