Introduction:
The Ticker functionality in Entuity delivers a live polling chart of one or more specified OIDs. This can be accessed via the Context Menu of a selected port or ports, or through the MIB Browser of other managed objects. Additional OIDs can be monitored by ticker by adding them through the MIB Browser.
With a ticker chart, you can poll an OID up to every second and chart it. The difference between a ticker chart and stream charts is that the stream in a stream chart is saved and has historic data. With a ticker chart, the data is stored only on the live chart itself. This means that if you close the chart, the polled data is then gone.
Supplied MIB variables for ports:
Entuity provides a number of MIB variables that you can use to monitor real-time performance at the port-level. If you need additional variables, you can specify them through the MIB Browser.
The number and types of MIB variables that Ticker can monitor at the port-level are determined by the type (vendor and product) of networking equipment being polled, together with the media type(s) of the port(s) being polled. The variable selection is determined through access to the standard bin.vendor file.
Most equipment supports only a subset of these variables, so do not expect all of these variables to be available across all equipment. Where ports are selected that are part of equipment from a variety of vendors, you may only select those variables that are common to all of the ports.
The available OIDs are as follows:

OutUtilization [%] | percentage of actual traffic volume transmitted against the maximum volume that can be handled by the port. |
InAborts | receiver aborted reception of the packet, possibly caused by clocking problems. |
InAlign | packet failed to finish on the 8-bit boundary, possibly caused by a synchronization error. |
InCrc | packet checksum error (Cyclic Redundancy Checks), possibly caused by a transmitter or line error. |
InGiant | packet above maximum allowed media size, possibly caused by a transmitter or synchronization error. |
InIgnored | packets where no attempt was made to process, possibly caused by severe inbound congestion or broadcast storms. |
InMIB-2Discards | number of inbound packets chosen to be discarded even though no errors had been detected (MIB-2 variable), possibly caused in order to free up buffer space. |
InMIB-2Errors | number of inbound packets that contained errors preventing them from being deliverable to a higher-layer protocol (MIB-2 variable) |
InNUcast Pkts | number of non-unicast (i.e., subnetwork-broadcast or subnetwork-multicast) packets inbound to a port. |
InOctets | total number of octets received on the interface, including framing characters. |
InOverrun | receiver buffer overflowed, possibly caused when the device cannot process received packets quickly enough. |
InQueue Drops | forwarding buffer overflowed, possibly caused when the device cannot forward inbound traffic quickly enough. |
InRunt | packet below minimum allowed media size, possibly caused by a transmitter or synchronization error. |
InUcastPkts | total number of subnetwork-unicast packets inbound to a port. |
InUnknown Proto | number of packets received via the interface that were discarded because of an unknown or unsupported protocol. |
OutAbort | receiver aborted transmission of packet, possibly caused by clocking problems. |
OutCarLoss | carrier loss, possibly caused by line error or loss. |
OutColln | collisions in packet transmission, possibly caused by an oversubscribed line. |
OutDefer | number of outbound packets for which transmission was deferred, possibly caused by an oversubscribed line. |
OutExcvColln | multiple collisions in line transmission, possibly caused by an oversubscribed line. |
Out Late Colln | packet caused collision outside of protocol specifications, possibly caused by transmitter error, cable fault, or network too long. |
OutMIB-2Discards | number of outbound packets chosen to be discarded, even though no errors had been detected to prevent their being transmitted (MIB-2 variable). |
OutMIB-2Errors | number of outbound packets that could not be transmitted because of errors (MIB-2 variable). |
OutMultColln | packet discarded because of multiple collisions on that packet, possibly caused by high network traffic. |
OutNUcast Pkts | total number of packets that higher-level protocols requested be transmitted to a non-unicast (i.e., a subnetwork-broadcast or subnetwork-multicast) address. This includes those packets that were discarded or not sent. |
OutOctets | total number of octets transmitted out of the interface, including framing characters. |
OutQueueDrop | outbound buffer overflowed, possibly caused because the outbound packet rate cannot be achieved at the line rate. |
OutSQETest | unable to determine if packet caused collision, possibly caused by transmitter or line error. |
OutUcastPkts | total number of packets that higher-level protocols requested be transmitted to a subnetwork-unicast address, including those that were discarded or not sent. |
To create a ticker chart:
- In the UI, navigate to the managed object for which you want to create a ticker chart, and either access Ticker via its context menu (if it is a port), or via its MIB Browser and click Ticker in the bottom right of the browser (if it is another type of managed object).
- This will open the Ticker form. Select the OID or OIDs that you want to display on the chart and click Done in the top right of the form, otherwise click Cancel. You can select multiple OIDs by clicking Ctrl or holding Shift.
- This will open the ticker chart.
To edit the chart settings:
- Click Edit via the chart's Overflow Menu.
- This will open the Configure Chart form on the right of the browser.
- In the Series Data section, you can click on an OID to open its Edit Series form.
- Drag in or add new attributes via the Add a new series or Drag Attribute or OID here box, as you would when creating a stream chart.
- Under the Chart Settings section, configure the chart as you see fit. Please see this article for further help and information on Chart Settings.
- Click Save in the top right of the form, otherwise click Cancel.
To edit what information is displayed on the chart:
- Click on the OIDs in the legend to either hide or display them on the chart as you want.
