IP address management in multi-server configurations
Introduction
From Entuity v21.0 GA upwards, you can use IP address management (IPAM) to plan, track and manage the IP address space used in your network in the context of IPv4/v6 networks and subnets (referred to as scopes), and ensure that the inventory of assignable IP addresses remains current and sufficient.
IPAM in Entuity allows you to do the following:
- view IP networks, their IP ranges and their hierarchies.
- add, edit, import and delete networks.
- schedule and manually run scans of networks.
- view IP addresses within a selected network.
- view, add, edit and delete DHCP servers, to automate the gathering of DHCP scope details.
- view the scope of DHCP servers.
- raise incidents and events for when IPAM IP usage exceeds a threshold, and when an IPAM conflict is found (i.e. when a network has an IP range that is not present on its DHCP server).
Networks cannot overlap, unless one is the child of another.
IPAM scanning is dependent on the time spent waiting for responses from IP address requests. Out of the box, Entuity IPAM will scan 150,000 IP addresses per Entuity server at the default scanning frequency of once every 2 hours. It is possible to reduce the scanning frequency to cover a larger range of IP addresses (scanning frequency can be changed via the IPAM Settings menu).
IP Address Management module
The IP Address Management module must be enabled for you to access the IPAM page. This module can be enabled or disabled using Configure, or by editing installed_modules.cfg.
Permission requirements
To access the IPAM page, and to add, modify or delete any entry thereon, you need to have the IP Address Management user permission. For further help and information on user permissions in Entuity, please see this article.
Audit Log entries
An Audit Log entry is added whenever any of the following actions are made:
- a network is added, edited or deleted.
- a DHCP server is added, edited or deleted.
To access the IP Address Management page
The abovelisted IPAM functionality is available from the IP Address Management page. To access it:
- Click the Main Menu and then Administration.
- Click IP Address Management.
- The IP Address Mangement page will open.
IP address management in multi-server configurations:
If multi-server configuration in Entuity is enabled, then a server selection dropdown field will be present in the top left of the IP Address Management page.
You can select a different Entuity server and perform the same functionality, e.g. viewing, adding and editing networks and DHCP servers.
To edit IPAM config values:
You can edit config values for IPAM via entuity.cfg. Please see this section for further help and information on configuring IPAM via entuity.cfg.
RESTful API functionality:
Please see the following for help and information on IPAM functionality via Entuity RESTful API:
- List settings and status of IPAM, modify the settings, and manually start a scan of IPAM networks.
- List scanned IP addresses.
- List an IP address and its history, modify the comments on an IP address, and delete an IP address.
- List information about DHCP servers, and add a new DHCP server.
- List information about, modify, or delete a specific DHCP server.
